Synopsis: “Cecilia Ramos is a single mother in her mid-40s who once dreamed of becoming a singer. When she had her son, she promised herself that she would let him pursue his passions and fully support his artistic pursuits growing up. While trying to be kind and caring, she finds herself overly invested in this aspect of her son’s life, culminating in his participation in the school play.”
As the sound editor, I received the video and audio files at the final stage of production, working at the same time as the colourist to finalize the film. Working on audio which was recorded by someone else, my duties and tasks were varied and demanding. One of the primary challenges was dealing with the dialogue. The recordings often had inconsistencies in volume levels and background noise, requiring clean-up work to ensure clarity and coherence. I aligned the dialogue to match the visual cues, creating an air-tight integration between visuals and sounds.
I had to carefully select and layer appropriate effects to enhance the scenes without overpowering the dialogue or music. This meant scouring extensive libraries for the perfect sound to complement each moment. I received the score from a different member of the production team then worked to incorporate it into each scene. The music needed to play well with the dialogue while still feeling grounded in reality. Balancing the impact of the music with the dialogue and sound effects was crucial to evoke the atmosphere of a theatre production. It was exciting working with material recorded by others, and the experience taught me how to properly address sonic atmospheres to be recreated using processing and effects.
